The ADHD Entrepreneur’s Delegation Paradox: Why “Starting Messy” is Your Secret Weapon

If you are an entrepreneur with ADHD, you probably live in a state of constant contradiction. You know that to grow your business and save your sanity, you need to delegate. Yet, the very thought of "onboarding" someone feels like just another massive task on an already overflowing to-do list.
This is the Delegation Paradox, and if we don't solve it, it leads straight to the "Burnout" cycle we know all too well.
The Lie We Tell Ourselves
We've all said it:
"By the time I’ve explained how to do this, I could have just done it myself."
In the short term, you're right. It is faster to do it yourself once. But when you do it yourself for the 50th time, even though your brain is screaming for a break, it's no longer "faster". It's a recipe for burnout.

For the ADHD brain, the barrier to delegation isn't usually a lack of trust; it's the executive function cost of organising the instructions. We feel like we need a perfect manual before we can ask for help.
You don't need a manual. You just need to start messy.
How to Delegate Without the Overwhelm
The goal isn't a flawless handoff. The goal is simply getting one thing off your plate this week so you can protect your energy levels. Here is how to do it "the ADHD way":
1. The Voice Memo Dump
Don't worry about writing a structured email. While you're making a coffee or walking on the treadmill, record a voice memo. Explain the task as if you're talking to a friend. Tell them the "why," the "what," and where the files are.
2. The "Over the Shoulder" Screen Share
The next time you actually do the task, record your screen (using a tool like Loom or even just a Zoom recording). Talk through your thought process out loud. "I'm clicking here because..." or "I usually ignore this error message..." This captures the "invisible" steps your brain does automatically.
3. The Rough Checklist
As you're doing the task, jot down a few bullet points. It doesn't have to be pretty. A messy list in a Google Doc is better than a perfect process that only exists in your head.

Perfection is the Enemy of Progress
Your first attempt at delegating a specific task won't be perfect. There might be follow-up questions. There might be a slight hiccup. That's okay.
As ADHD entrepreneurs, we often fall into the trap of catastrophising a small mistake. But a "70% correct" task done by someone else is 100% of a task you didn't have to do. That is a win for your nervous system.
Your Challenge Today
At ADHD Lancashire, we see so many brilliant minds stalled by the weight of "doing it all."
What is one task that is currently draining your battery? Whether it's sorting customer emails, managing a spreadsheet, or scheduling social media. Could you record a 2-minute voice memo about it today?
Don't wait for the "perfect" time to hire or the "perfect" system to be built. Start messy. Your future, non-burnt-out self will thank you!
