Updated: 4 days ago

Please note that the Adult ADHD NHS Service applies to all areas of Lancashire, excluding Blackpool and South Cumbria, which have alternative providers for adults with ADHD.

Adult ADHD Assessment Service in Lancashire (Since 1st April 2021)

Haydock Medical has been commissioned to provide the Adult ADHD Assessment Service in Lancashire and has been accepting new referrals since 1 April 2021.

Haydock Medical ADHD Service:

Haydock Medical is a GP practice that established a specialist ADHD service in April 2020. The service provides assessment, diagnosis, and medication titration. Psychosocial interventions will also be offered to certain patients where appropriate.

Referrals are accepted for adults aged 18 and over, or from 17 years and 6 months if transitioning from Children and Young People (CYP) Services.

Referral Pathway to the Adult ADHD NHS Service:

  • Referral: Typically initiated by a GP to a specialist such as a psychiatrist, paediatrician (for children), or a specialist ADHD service.

  • Process: This involves interviews, questionnaires (completed by the patient and individuals who know them well), and a review of the patient's medical and educational history.

  • Waiting Time: NHS waiting lists can be long, often extending to 3–4 years.

  • Cost: Free, but expect lengthy waiting times.

Alternative Assessment Pathways

"Right to Choose"

This NHS policy in England allows patients more control over where they receive treatment, including ADHD assessments. This will enable you to reduce the long NHS waiting lists by choosing an approved provider for your evaluation and care, including some private providers. The NHS covers the cost, which can significantly reduce waiting times for an ADHD diagnosis.

  • Referral: This typically starts with a GP referral to a specialist, such as a psychiatrist or paediatrician (for children).

  • Process: This includes interviews, questionnaires (for both the patient and those who know them well), and often a review of the patient's medical and educational history.

  • Waiting Time: Typically around 6 months to 1 year.

  • Cost: Free

  • It is essential to choose an ADHD Assessment service that also provides a treatment plan if you are going to use medications as part of your treatment plan.

  • Free Download: All the necessary documentation to take with you to your doctor's referral appointment. Click the button below.

Private ADHD Assessment

  • Referral: ADHD Lancashire can refer you to private ADHD Clinics.

  • Process: A diagnostic assessment for ADHD typically includes an evaluation of symptoms and a review of your medical and psychiatric history. Additionally, you may be required to complete questionnaires or cognitive tests. A GMC-registered psychiatrist specialising in ADHD will conduct interviews and assessments.

  • Wait Time: Much shorter than NHS options—appointments are often available within two weeks.

  • Cost: The cost can range from £550 to £1,500, depending on the provider and the complexity of the assessment.

  • Shared Care Agreements: If medication is part of your treatment, discuss Shared Care Agreements with your GP. After titration to your optimal dose, your GP may be able to continue prescribing under an agreement with the clinic.
